QLVL members - Hendrik Kockaert

 

Hendrik J. Kockaert studied Romance Philology at the University of Leuven and was awarded a D. Litt. et Phil. in 1996 for his thesis on experimental and acoustic phonetics ("Corrective strategies for the pronunciation of French as a foreign language among Swazi learners"), at the University of Johannesburg.

Currently, he is an Associate Professor of French Linguistics, Terminology, Legal Translation, and Translation Technology, at KU Leuven campus Antwerp. He is a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South-Africa, in the area of Terminology management. He is the founder and editor of the Journal of Internationalisation and Localisation [JIAL], and a Visiting Professor of Terminology and Translation environment tools at the Universidad de Granada. He is an accredited ECQA Certified Terminology Manager Trainer. For ISO/TC 37/SC 1, he is a nominated expert in terminology issues and the convener for Work Group 5 in which he is preparing standards on concept modelling in terminology work (ISO 24156-1 Graphic notations for concept modeling in terminology work and its relationship with UML -- Part 1: Guidelines for using UML and Mind Mapping notation in terminology work). He is also a member of NEN 400 037, the Dutch Standardization Institute, and NBN, the Belgian Standardization Institute.

Research

Hendrik's research focuses on terminology standardization issues, translation quality assurance, legal translation and terminology, concept modelling in terminology work, and corrective phonetics.
