The alternation between inflected and uninflected adjectives in definite Dutch NPs with a singular neuter head noun

This PhD project deals with a specific type of inflectional variation in Dutch NPs, viz. the alternation between the inflected and uninflected adjective in a definite NP with a singular neuter head noun will be analysed. The goal of the present investigation is to identify the parameters that constrain the alternation between both inflectional variants in actual language use. The effect of language-internal as well as language-external factors will be measured.

The most important explanatory factors are:

  • the prosodic structure of the prosodic phrase constituted by the NP,
  • the semantics of the adjective-noun combination,
  • the regional variety of Dutch,
  • the register.
Multivariate statistics will be used to model the network of intertwined parameters governing the inflectional alternation. The following research questions will be addressed:
  • What is the impact of the different language internal and language external parameters?
  • What is the combined effect of the different parameters?
  • Do we need different models to account for the adjectival variation in Netherlandic Dutch and in Belgian Dutch, the uninflected adjective being the only natural variant in Belgian dialects?
