Yanan Hu's PhD project intends to extend the approach that is currently being applied in the QLVL research unit to the study of Chinese causative constructions, and to compare the results with those of the QLVL researches on Dutch causatives from a theoretical point of view. Her research is expected to contribute to find the prototype of Chinese monomorphemic causatives, work out semantic and functional divisions of labor that exist among them, and thus to describe semantic and grammatical system of Chinese monomorphemic causatives, test if a multivariate conception of grammar can be confirmed by the Chinese results, and develop a general model of causality in language by looking into the questions: what does the comparison tell us about causativity, and what does it tell us about the architecture of a usage-based model of language?
