Steven Schoonjans

Bert

I am a doctoral student at the Linguistics Department of the University of Leuven. In 2008, I was awarded an MA degree in Linguistics and Literature Studies (German and French), and the year after, I obtained an MA degree in Comparative and Historical Linguistics, both at the University of Leuven as well. I also took the interuniversity post-initial MA program in Cognitive and Functional Linguistics, which I finished in 2010. Since October 2010, I have been working on a PhD under the supervision of prof. dr. Kurt Feyaerts and dr. Geert Brône. My focus is on German modal particles and how they can be analyzed as multimodal constructions expressing intersubjective meanings.

Research interests

My research is situated within the domain of Cognitive Linguistics, more specifically within the framework of Construction Grammar. I mainly work on particles (especially modal particles) in German. Specifically for my PhD, I focus on the multimodal aspects of German modal particles and on the intersubjective meaning aspects they convey. I also did some research on their development and their translations.

My research topics thus include:

  • German modal particles (in general);
  • multimodality;
  • intersubjectivity;
  • Construction Grammar;
  • grammaticalization;
  • contrastive studies and translation analysis (esp. German-French).
